I think most of us like music from our “growing-up” years, aka the terrible-Ts. Er, that would be teenage years, not twos. For me, that puts me into the 1970s and 80s, yet I pretty much think the 80s were the worse decade of music since musical notes were put to paper. Very little – well, except Billie Idol, is something I would sit and listen to now.
What prompted this post was a weekend of listening to Queen, Bread (an ad for walk in tubs came up every other song – apparently my musical taste is the same as that of arthritic senior citizens), the Carpenters and Barry Manilow on youtube. Love, love, LOVE them all! Queen is one of my favorite rock bands of all time.
I doubt I have ever heard a better voice than Karen Carpenter’s. Oh what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like that! Although she’s not my favorite female vocalist – Melissa Etheridge is – love her songs!
There is no denying I am a Fanilow. I don’t go to concerts (rather spend the money on an album), but I have seen Barry Manilow in concert, and I hope to again some day soon!
Funny story! Sonny-boy was 13-14 years old when we took a trip to Colonial Williamsburg. The only Barry Manilow song he had ever heard was Copacabana and thought it was a fun, if different song (probably was watching a Chevy Chase movie or something). Sooooooo I told him I brought along a few Barry Manilow cds, and we’d listen to them on the ride down south.
I inserted the Barry Manilow Vol 1 cd, and as Mandy came on, his face took on this expression of sheer horror… WHAT IS THAT!? he asked!? By the time Daybreak started to play I was laughing so hard at the kid’s tortured looks that tears were streaming down my face. My ex-husband was laughing too. I don’t think we ever made it to volume 2 as the cds “mysteriously” disappeared.
So what kind of music do you like?
Here are a few of my favorites…

We have almost the same taste! The Carpenters song, Close to you, was a lullaby for my babies. I agree on the eighties music to! I also love me some good ole red dirt country! Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia line, Jason Alderman…. and the classics *George strait, George Jones, merle, cash. …etc

Awww that is so sweet, Tami. If I sang to Sonny-boy, he’d still bear emotion scares – and he’d probably have hearing damage too.

Amanda my DD was named Amanda so I could call her… Mandi lol
Manilow, Sedaka, Elton John – loved them all! And I was a Teeny Bopper – Donny and David!
My brothers are 9 and 5 years older than me – so I also grew up with the Beach Boys and Beatles
LOVE the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean!
I walked down the aisle … once… to “On Top Of The World” by the Carpenters!
Thanks fro the memories, Ann!

The Beach Boys were another of the (very) few concerts I attended! Loved the Beach Boys.

A wide variety. I know a lot of the 70’s but love the 80’s. I know more classic 50’s and 60’s than I want to admit (thanks Mom and Dad). Don’t care too much for country but I can tolerate the older country songs. Then my kids introduced me to their music. I lean more towards metal, but I do enjoy classical when the mood strikes, especially for Christmas. Favorite bands are Adam and the Ants, Def Leppard, Rammstein and Apocalyptica (heavy metal cellists) to name a few. I used to own a Manilow LP and spent one summer listening to the same Queen cassette my aunt loaned me.

Wow, that is a wide variety, Marie!

These posts cracked me up.. We have very similar tastes Ann.. Im a 60s & 70s child myself and love easy listening probably the most.. Duets and harmonies are probably my most favorites.. Carpenders, Seals & Crofts, Lowen & Navarro, Simon & Garfunkle, Hall & Oats, Crosby Stills Nash & sometimes Young, Lobo, America, Bread, Marshall Tucker Band, Little River Band, Firefall, Poco, and all the zillions of bands/musicians that came out of Poco, (Eagles), Journey. etc..
My favorite rock bands tend to be late 60s, early to mid 70s… Foghat, Steppenwolf, Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, Grand Funk, Three Dog Night.. Joe Cocker, Bob Seger.. I loved Queen in the mid 70s but I liked the earlier stuff more than the later.. I loved Ted Nugent & Sammy Hagar..ZZ Top etc.. Jethro Tull, Alan Parsons Project & Kraftwerk..
Im not wild about super heavy metal but I love AC/DC.. and they are AWESOME in concert.. and I really loved some of the 80s hair bands.. Bon Jovi..Poison.. Great White.. White Lion.. Cinderella.. Motley Crue..Def Leppard.. White Snake.. Guns & Roses.. Scorpions..
We love the blues too.. from Southern Rock Blues, Texas Blues, Delta Blues to Detroit Blues.. And I love jazz too.. Most of the jazz I love sits just along side the blues..
Oh.. Concerts have always been one of my favorite things in the world to attend.. I LOVE them.. and its my amusement of choice… always!! I’ve been to HUNDREDS!! Many hundreds!! I have forgotten way more than I will EVER remember.. lol
On the other side of the coin.. I love Country music.. I love Western music too.. 😉 I grew up in Texas.. You cant get away from it there.. I enjoy all the old old timers and I enjoy all the new-comers too.. Most country these days is more like easy listening.. Good times & good dancing tunes.. I used to be a shitkicker dancer.. fun fun times I also still do line dancing these days.. not as much as I used to but I dip back into it when I can.. My current country favorites are Trace Atkins (I’d run away with him in a heartbeat! :P) Travis Tritt… Toby Keith.. Ok.. I’d run away with all of them. 😛 And I love Tim McGraw too.. but I dont want to run away with him.. haha
I like a lot of instrumental music.. mostly acoustic guitar, piano, flutes, and percussion based music.. We have loads of it and I have friends & family who are professionals in those genres as well.. I tend to like melodic music the most, no matter what genre its in..
I also like Christian music too.. I usually have my car radio set to a Christian station that plays really awesome music.. not always… but often.. Their morning shows arent obnoxious.. that is huge when Im on my way to work in the morning.. 😛
Ok.. I’ll shut up now.. 😛 I love music.. If you had asked what kind of music I DONT like.. my list would have been much shorter.. haha.. Opera & Rap.. YEK!! Everything else I can take most of the time..

Hmmm I see you wandered into the 80s, Kim. Not sure if I could listen to all that. 😛
