Easy Baked Southern Cheese Grits Pie Recipe
One of my very favorite southern foods is grits, and if they are cheese grits, it is even better!! I absolutely adore cheese grits, and they have become a staple down here over the years. So when Hubby offered to make a cheese grits pie, I was all over that proposition!
These are fairly mild, not heavy on the cheese (believe me, I’ve had cheese grits that have been more cheese than grits), and very easy to make! The clean-up (my contribution to this recipe) was simple and non-sticky. The leftovers are delicious!
Picture this: a slice of warm, cheesy, and savory cheese grits pie that embodies the essence of Southern comfort. If your taste buds tingle at the thought, you’re in for a treat! In this culinary adventure, we will explore the delightful world of cheese grits pie. This humble yet scrumptious dish is a close cousin to the beloved cheese grits casserole.
This is an easy way to make the traditional Southern dish the whole family loves. This is great for not only taste but also equal distribution. A lovely brunch item, this delicious casserole can be sliced into more than six pieces when serving a big southern breakfast. Grits are a Southern tradition, and this is a cheesy way to serve them.
While this southern staple is generally considered a breakfast casserole, you could also serve these as a dinner side dish. This Southern favorite pairs well with pork chops or chicken.
Tips and variations for making this cheese grits pie:
● If you do not have bacon grease, a cooking spray, butter, or canned Crisco will work to grease your pie plate, but the bacon grease does add flavor, and I would advise using that if possible.
● Hominy grits (finer texture, nixtamalized), stone-ground grits, white grits, yellow grits – the type of grits you use in this recipe is up to you – choose your favorite!
● You can use pre-shredded cheese or shred your brick cheese.
● Add more cheese if you like. It will melt, and you can stir it in.
● To change the taste, try adding a bit of garlic powder or black pepper.
● A 9″ pie plate holds 4 cups by volume. If you would like to bake this in a different form factor (so as a cheese grits casserole), make sure you use a dish that will hold 4 cups (an 8″ cake pan will).
● Double the recipe and use a 2 or 3-quart casserole dish (baking dish) to make a cheesy grits casserole.
● Serve topped with Parmesan cheese, grated white cheddar, grated yellow cheddar, hot sauce, crispy bacon bits, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, some chopped green onions, or whatever toppings you might enjoy on your cheese grits.
● For best results, store any leftovers in the fridge by either tightly covering the pie plate or in an airtight container.
● Warm the leftovers in the microwave the next day.
● This recipe is made with simple ingredients commonly found in your local grocery store.
