This is the diary of our 2015 CSA share. The cost of our full share is $545 for 22 weeks, from June through October, and works out to $24.75 per week. Western New York weather is such that June is lightest CSA month. September and October will be more than abundant! The first few weeks are light, and very, very leafy. As we move to the fall, the CSA becomes more abundant, and the variety increases greatly.
We also purchased a Fruit Share this year for $180, lasting 18 weeks which works out to $10 per week. The local fruit included in the fruit share starts with cherries, apricots, plums, peaches, nectarines, blueberries, and moves into pears, raspberries and of course apples! This portion of the share begins in July.
Hubby came with me this week. Apparently I wasn’t doing a good enough job picking on my own. (rolls eyes) We brought Mr. Max and he was pretty happy. He stays on our shoulder in the shed where we pick up, but then gets down for the fields. One person can’t u-pick with Max along, but two people are fine; one to entertain the pooch, the other to do the picking.
I think cherries are coming to an end. This week we “only” received 1.75# instead of the 3.5# we received the last few weeks. Too bad, because they were super delicious! This week we did receive apricots though, 2.25#. Hubby and I have been having a “discussion” on what to do with them. My thought? Whoever processes chooses.
Out in the u-pick the last of the snow peas were dangling on the vines. The green beans were plentiful, however. I have a ton in my backyard too. (I need to post a backyard gardening post Monday … this year is really getting away from me!) Since Hubby went with me to the CSA, he had the honor of cleaning and processing this week.
Bet he doesn’t make that mistake again anytime soon.
