One of the best things about going on a cruise is the ability to take home a few bottles of duty free liquor. Sometimes, that duty is substantial, and so the savings are substantial too. Hubby and I learned long ago that we needed to check the liquor cabinet, check local prices and make a list of what we “needed” prior to boarding our ship. We also pack single liquor boxes and plastic bags if we are flying home as you are no longer allowed to bring liquor on the plane (unless you are buying in Puerto Rico after you clear security that is). The last few cruises, the stores have packed the boxes very well though, and we haven’t used our own boxes in a while.
This time around we didn’t have many cruise stops. And when we did go into port, there seemed to be less liquor stores than in the past. So in our last stop, which was Jamaica, besides buying Jamaican coffee, we decided to get serious and look around for any good liquor deals. We picked up two bottles of rum: one Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, and one I had never seen before: Captain Morgan White Rum Rhum Blanc. These were $10 each for a liter.
Rum is fermented from sugar or molasses. When made, rum is clear. If making white rum, it of course remains clear but the golden or dark rums gain their color from cask aging or added coloring. While the sugar plant originates in Papua New Guinea, the islands of the Caribbean have produced rum for over 400 years. Sugar is actually the number one export of Jamaica.
The Captain Morgan White Rum Rhum Blanc is a blended from Canadian and Caribbean rums. It is 40 proof, quite sweet and smooth.
I normally like my run with diet Coke, but find this rum works very, very well with diet Cherry coke!
The distributor of the Captain Morgan White Rum Rhum Blanc looks to be out of Toronto, so that will be easy for me to get at a local duty free store – I hope. I have to tell you that while I am a Captain Morgan Spiced Rum loyalist, I found this just different enough from traditional rum to really enjoy!
As always, drink responsibly and please don’t drink and drive.

I love rum.. If I could only ever have one type of booze for the rest of my life.. rum would probably be it.. I use a lot of vodka in tinctures & such, but to drink.. gimme rum & coke any day!

Me too, Kim. I love all sorts of rum except maybe black rum. That for some reason reminds me of whiskey, and there is NO reason it should! LOL

This White Rum variety is considered ‘traditional rum’. Spiced rum is a flavored, or a non-traditional rum. Bacardi has perfected this formula for 150 years, stick with Superior or Gold for your traditional rums, and Bacardi Oakheart for your spiced rum. They start with a purer Puerto Rican Rum base, whereas this crap is made in Canada?! A blind taste test with your friends will show Bacardi is always preferred!

You just hit the nail on the head. Captain Morgan white is NOT a puerto rican rum, so to compare it with that category of rums is a logical dud. Capt. White is an alternative for those who don’t care for the spice of Original Capt. but still want something sweeter than the swill bacardi bottles.

john, what rums would you compare Capt. White to?

Sorry Captain morgan is not good rum…a blend between caribbean and canadian rum? eh…..I recommend trying 7 Sirens Rum, now that is true smooth caribbean white rum!

I found that Brugal white rum is the most unique of all white rums. Best with Mojitos.

Oh I loved the Brugal dry white rum (see my Brugal rum review here) but it is almost like comparing to an apple to an orange to compare the two, Paul.
