Tips and variations for making this easy Italian Margarita recipe:
● This is a different margarita. It is sweet and sour, and not just due to the mix. This reminded me of a sweet-tart with a kick. You will likely like this Italian Margarita recipe if you like sweet tarts.
● Unlike most Margaritas, I chose to rim this glass with sugar. If you prefer a salted rim, use coarse salt (margarita salt) to rim your cocktail glass.
● Amaretto is an Italian almond liqueur. The heavy use of sweet amaretto in this cocktail recipe might lead some to call this an amaretto margarita!
● Swap out the amaretto for limoncello for a more citrusy cocktail. Limoncello is a unique, delicious Italian liqueur from the Sorrento, Capri area in Italy.
● You can use any tequila with this recipe: silver tequila, gold tequila, Blanco tequila, Añejo tequila – any tequila you would use in a regular margarita. Some people prefer to make a margarita with the best tequila they have available; others prefer not to “waste” the good stuff.
● Triple sec is an orange liquor. You can use Cointreau, Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur (from Sicily), Grand Marnier, etc., as long as you realize that each of these liqueurs will create a different version of this cocktail. A unique twist and different flavors is not a bad thing. And who knows? Your change may make for the best Italian margarita ever!
● Margarita mix and sweet n’ sour mix are the same recipes and interchangeable.
● Use orange slices, lemon slices, orange wedges, or a lemon wedge to garnish your glass. The type of orange or lemon you use is to your taste: blood orange, navel orange, etc. If you like, add some lemon zest or orange zest to the top of your poured cocktail.
● If you do not know how to rim a cocktail glass, click here for instructions. It is very easy! You can use amaretto liqueur, triple sec, or tequila for this Italian Margarita recipe for the wet. The dry is coarse sugar.
● This cocktail recipe is made with simple ingredients commonly found in your local grocery store or liquor store.

Im afraid Im a margarita purist.. There are a lot of things Im not too picky about.. but this is one of them. I tend to make my own at home since its hard to get a really good one “out” but a few weeks ago, a girlfriend & I met for lunch and they had a “‘rita’ special that was super inexpensive so we gave em a shot.. OMG were they good.. I was shocked to my silly purist boots. 😉
Im not a fan of amaretto but I do need it occasionally in recipes so who knows…maybe some day I’ll buy a bottle of amaretto and have to give these a shot… 😉
