Glow in the Dark Jello Shots
Jello Shots are pretty easy to make. This is the basic recipe anyone can follow:
● 1 small box of Flavored Gelatin (there are others with unflavored Gelatin, but this is the basics)
● 1 cup water, boiling
● 1 cup of: vodka/rum/tequila/whiskey/schnapps/liqueurs
The 1 cup of some sort of spirits is the key. The different flavor combinations of alcoholic beverages combined with the flavored gelatin are what makes the tasty jello shot varieties.
Hubby and I attended party last month at my brother’s house. I volunteered to bring gelatin shots. I made 6 different varieties! Here is the tower with some of the gelatin shots (there were 80 shots in all):

How to make Jello shots glow in the dark:
Some of the recipes we made for the party were better received than others. These Glow in the Dark Jello shots tasted fine. They are like a blue raspberry-ish taste. The “glow in the dark” part was a bust for the party as we didn’t stay late – and wouldn’t have had a black light with us even if we did.
Tonic water is what makes a Jello shot glow. You can basically make ANY jello shot glow in the dark just swapping the liquid to tonic water (obviously tap water to tonic water is best). However, if you expect to just plop these Glow in the Dark Jello Shots on a table and they will “glow”, you are in for a disappointment. You need a black light for the jello shots to “glow” in the dark.
When I started researching how to make a jello shot glow in the dark, I quickly saw tonic water, tonic water, TONIC WATER! was the answer. But no one mentioned the stinking BLACK LIGHT!!! So, when I started googling on how to actually get the tonic water Jello shots to glow in the dark and stumbled across some comment somewhere that spilled the beans, I was quasi-relieved. After I made these and was ready to photograph for the blog post I was thinking… a black light!? But these Jello shots are going to the party tomorrow! Where was I going to get a black light!?
Hubby to the rescue!
Hubby has a gazillion flashlights in his flashlight collection (that is, sadly, a thing in our house), so of course he had a black light flashlight in his office. Now the black light flashlight was fine for showing one (or two or three) glow in the dark jello shots on a clear surface, but you’d probably want a rope black light
(like in a bar) for a party setting.
Set up your glow in the dark jello shots on a clear tray, in a bed of ice (with the rope of black light underneath the ice) or turn over a clear plastic popcorn bowl and put the rope of black light underneath. That is actually what I used to take the photos in this post… a clear bowl with the black light underneath. The photos were taken in the dark in our dining room. The darker the better.
The souffle cups are 2oz, and a shot glass is 1oz, 1.5oz or 2oz normally, so you may get a different number of servings depending on the vessel you use to set the gelatin.
Glow in the Dark Jello Shots Ingredients:
● 1¼ cups Tonic Water, divided
● 3oz Berry Blue Jell-O Package
● ¾ cup Malibu Rum
● 12 Candy Eyeballs
(optional)
Glow in the Dark Jello Shots Mise en Place:
● Medium Pot
● Measuring Cup
● Wooden Spoon
or Silicone Spatula 
● 12 2oz Souffle Cup with Lids
or Shot Glasses 
or Plastic Shot Glasses
● Black Light
Glow in the Dark Jello Shots Instructions:
● In a medium pot, bring one cup of tonic water to a boil on the stove.
● Add Berry Blue Jell-O to boiling tonic water; dissolve completely.
● Remove from heat and allow the mixture cool to close to room temperature; approximately 15 minutes.
● Add ¾ cup Malibu Rum and ¼ cups Tonic Water to the jello mixture; combine.
● Pour into 2 ounce soufflé cups. Allow some headroom and do not fill to the top.
● Remove any bubbles that may form.
● You may cap your soufflé cups, or wait until the gelatin has set before capping.
● Place in refrigerator to set, approximately 2 hours.
● Add red veined candy eyeballs for Halloween parties!
● Serve after set.
● To get the jello shots to glow in the dark, place a black light underneath, to the side, or surrounding the jello shots to make them glow.
