I had been searching for dishes for our Florida condo the last few weeks. I had finally decided I wanted to go with Fiesta Dinnerware, and found a fabulous deal at Macy’s (that runs through the 18th). When all was said and done, I ended up with service for 8 (2 peacock, 2 cobalt, 2 white and 2 turquoise) as well as 2 serving bowls for just under $200. I was thrilled!
Our new dishes arrived yesterday!
Hubby and I took a year to find our current household kitchen dishes that we use at our New York house. They are grey and made by Mikasa. About a week after we bought them, they were discontinued (seriously). I have no idea what we will do if we break something and replacements.com is out of stock. Another set of mutually agreed upon dishware may be more than our marriage can handle!
The darker, muted colors work very well up north, but down in Florida I want color! And you don’t get much more colorful than Fiesta Dinnerware! A bonus is they are made in the USA. And, because I mix and matched, if we break something and that color is no longer being produced, wellllll we just buy another color!
Hubby wanted all one color for the dishes and I quickly nixed that idea. To me, the fun of Fiesta-ware is in mixing and matching different colors. To make him happy, I was going to get a set of 4 white Fiesta-ware and then the colors I wanted, but he decided he wasn’t going to be an additional $90 unhappy (for 4 sets). I told him I didn’t want to hear any complaints from him about the color selection, and bought two sets of white for his personal use. I did ask him what colors he wanted, and he said blue, so that is what I went with. Once we finish our wall color selection (and I am considering blues or yellows but want to bring down trial pots to test on the walls), then I can add another set or two of Fiesta Dinnerware to bring in pops of color!
That’s one item down for Florida housewares, 457,316 to go!

Corelle, it has been great for when kids are younger and dishes can break easier. I have seen the plates fall from a high place and not break. I am about due for a new set of dishes to go with our new house.

I had the plain white Corelle when we moved in here. The edges were a bit beat up from years of hard use. Those edges drove Hubby nuts, but not enough to compromise before a year of looking for a new. Those same Corelle dishes are still going strong for Sonny-boy!

Correll white with a small viney leaf thing on the outer edge. My husband bought a set when he first got out of college and we have just bought a few more items from an outlet store for what we wanted a few more pieces of. Don’t know when we will ever replace, as they are a bit nicked, but to me dishware is functional and I am not much of a decorator.

I get that Skirnir. Our kitchen dishes were an agreement we both could live with, my “good” dishes I bought ohhhh 30 years ago or so. Anytime I even think about replacing those, I get sticker shock and forgetaboutit.

No fun colorful dishes here… I have Corelle too.. If they chip, out the door they go though.
M’honey had some when I moved in that I think are now all gone, I had Corelle with blue flowered borders, and then we got his moms when she passed which were green flowered borders.. all are white.
I do look at some of the other dinnerware on displays but its tough to buy any when there isnt anything wrong with what you have.. Sigh.. Oh well.. Enjoy those beautiful dishes!

Thanks Kim! It is fun picking out new things and going in a totally different decorating scheme than we have up here.

I have had fiesta ware for years because I love the colors. When I go shopping and see the new colors, I am very tempted to buy more, but don’t really need any more dishes. I am sure you will enjoy them, Ann.
Ann says
My greatest fear is I won’t stop adding more, Barb. 😛

I’m pretty pathetic. After 15 years of marriage we still have the Corelle that my grandma gave me for my hope chest! She was working at Sonyea (State of New York Epileptic Asylum) when New York state decided to convert it to a prison. They were getting rid of everything so she rescued what she could from going into a dumpster. After all these years I have eight bowls, 10 little plates, and 12 dinner plates. I would love something new, but I have a dream set in my head that I have never seen in real life. I want something with a charcoal/black color, but not shiny, and I want it to be square-ish to match my square (5×5) kitchen island.

Good luck with your search, Stephanie!

I wish I had Fiesta, they are beautiful! I have a plain white set of Corningware . They were very cheap and we have never broken any even though we have had them for many many years.
Ann says
Sounds like they were inexpensive, but well made, Shell. A real deal!

I was sort of in a hurry when I replaced our everyday dishware and bought the classic white square dishes. Tho’ I love them and their relatively plain look, I wish I would have paid more attention. They are SUPER heavy! I did not spend a lot on them, thinking some would break, etc and I could replace them soon. Well, guess what? That was about 4 years ago and not a single break or chip, etc. Like you, Ann, I want the Fiesta ware, or something similar, in a potpouri of colors! I guess I’m going to have to ‘accidentally’ break some dishes…
Ann says
I understand what you are saying, Donna…. those dishes we took a year to decide on weigh a ton! Ooopie will probably just make me have to buy from replacements.com though. If I thought it would lead to replacing the dishes…

I have a set of Corelle dishes that were in my “hope chest” from my grandma. I think they are from the 1970s or 1980s. They have a green and goldish border. I don’t plan on replacing them (as they are a daily reminder of my grandma, who has passed), but if/when I do, I would LOVE to get Fiestaware! I love bright, fun colors. 🙂
