This adorable little jar flower holder is easy to make, rustic decor. Great for indoor or outdoor decorating, this sweet little bud vase fills in that small section of open wall space perfectly. This step-by-step tutorial will show you exactly how to make this simple DIY farmhouse décor jar flower holder inexpensively.
Farmhouse Décor: Jar Flower Holder
I wanted to explore the farmhouse décor trend and asked my niece if she had any outdoor farmhouse style decorating ideas. I have that flower wheelbarrow in the backyard, the wooden table to grow my bagged vegetables, and we installed a shed (a much-needed shed!). Now, I wanted something that might match.
She brought in four ideas, including the terrific little DIY farmhouse house number sign I shared a last month, this versatile Farmhouse Décor: Age and Stencil a Crate and this Farmhouse Décor: Easy Painted Mirror. As a fifth farmhouse decor piece, we did this sweet little Farmhouse Décor: Laundry Room Organizer.
We actually made everything at the same time as these five projects use a lot of the same materials. Not only did it keep costs down, it sped things along.
Farmhouse Décor: Jar Flower Holder Notes:
● The vinegar solution you make MUST sit for at least 24 hours uncovered. If you cover the solution, it might oxidize and turn orange.
● To remove the baby food jar label easily, simply fill it with hot water until the glue softens on the label. Pull the label off. Any residue can be removed with a quick scrub from a steel wool pad.
● A baby food jar was used on this craft. If you do not have a baby food jar, a small relish jar, mustard jar, jelly/jam jar would also work.
● If you plan on hanging this outside, you will either want it under a covered area or add a coat or three of varnish before adding the hose clamp.
● Nearly all the materials necessary to make this easy Farmhouse Décor: Jar Flower Holder can be purchased at at JoAnn, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby.
Farmhouse Décor: Jar Flower Holder Materials:
● Mason Jar Shaped Plaque (you can use any wooden plaque you like)
● Vinegar
● Steel Wool
● Jars
● White Paint
● Water
● Jar with Lid
● Foam Paint Brushes
● Hose Clamp
● Screw Driver
● Tacks
● Hammer
● Twine (if your plaque does not have a hanger)
Farmhouse Décor: Jar Flower Holder Instructions:
● 24 hours before making this craft, prepare a vinegar solution. In a small jar, fill ¾ of the way to the top and insert a steel wool pad. Allow to sit for 24 hours uncovered.
● Create a whitewash-like paint: simply add a little bit of white paint and water to a jar with a lid. Shake vigorously to combine. You want the whitewash-like paint to be the consistency of cream.
● Cover your work surface against any spills.
● Using a foam brush, paint on some of the whitewash-like paint onto the mason jar shaped plaque, wipe off immediately. Continue until the entire body of mason jar shaped plaque is completely whitewashed. Do not paint the lid (unless you want to, and then let vinegar while still wet on the lid alone).
● Note: If you would like to do more than one coat, wait until the paint dries completely before adding layer two, three, etc. The wood will suck in a lot of the moisture, so best to wait until each layer is dry.
● Using a foam brush, paint the vinegar solution over the mason jar shaped plaque. Get into the nooks and crannies by turning the brush sideways.
● Allow the mason jar plaque to dry completely.
● Remove the label from the baby food jar. (See notes above for an easy method to remove a jar label.)
● Make certain your hose clamp is small enough/large enough for the jar you are using.
● Open the hose clamp and line it up with the jar where you would like it to go on your plaque. Mark with a pencil if you like.
● Move the jar away, lay the open hose clamp on the plaque, and tack down three (3) tacks (or more) to hold it in place on your plaque. Make certain your tacks do not go through the wood plaque. The size used in this tutorial was #2 (¼”).
● Close the hose clamp slightly.
● Insert the jar into the hose clamp, and finish tightening the ring so the jar is firmly in place and will not slip or fall.
● Optional: if your plaque does not have a hanger on the back, add some twine and staple and /or tack the twine on the back of the plaque. We braided three pieces of twine together, and tied off the ends. Then, we stapled the twine to the back of the plaque and added two brads on each side to hold it as the last thing we wanted was for it to slip and fall.
● Fill with fake or real flowers.
● Hang as desired.
