This past weekend I went to Friendship Park to take photographs of Friendship Fountain, Jacksonville, Florida. I stayed through the afternoon and evening, and these are the photographs I took:

And these are the evening photos I took. There is a colored light display, and the fountain varies from low to high:

Now, those of you that have followed me for a while are probably wondering if I was sprinkled with magical photographic fairy dust. There is no way Ann took those pictures, is probably what is running through your mind.
But I did.
You could say I was sprinkled with magical photographic fairy dust, or more accurately you could say I was there for lessons, and had a fantastic teacher.
And you would be correct.
Hubby saw Remember Forever listed on Amazon local one day, and asked if I was interested. Since I knew I needed photography lessons – I recognize I am a terrible photographer – I decided to sign up for the landscape and evening classes.
Worth. Every. Penny. And more.
Luke Ballard was my instructor. He and his wife are Australians currently on a journey across America to photograph the sites, and give lessons. They are six weeks into their journey, and it has already been er, exciting for them. But I’ll leave the stories for their book, or for you to enjoy if you decide to take one of their Tour Across America lessons. They will be teaching in 40 cities, over the course of 10 months. Buffalo is actually their second last stop on the tour in November, and I very well may sign up for advanced travel photography (poor Luke).
This is Luke’s famous Machu Picchu photograph, and this was one he took of all of Machu Picchu. Notice the lack of people? That isn’t photoshopped, but a nifty little filter I will be purchasing!
Luke has literally been all over the world shopping travel photography. He’s the real deal. And yet he was able to teach me at a level I could understand, was very patient when I screwed up or did not remember, and offered more tips than you can possibly imagine. There is something to be said for someone that knowledgeable to be able to clearly teach a newbie like me.
If you live near one of the major cities on their tour and have a DSLR camera, are interested in bettering your photography, and have a few hours (and dollars) to spare, I would definitely recommend you book one of his classes. Heck, if you book the night photography class, Luke will even teach you how to take pictures of moving vehicles that look like this! (again, not photoshopped)

Great photos!! My birthday is at the end of November, I’m thinking I can convince hubby the class in Buffalo would be the perfect birthday present 🙂 (Also, the last link with the moving cars didn’t work)

You should, Stephanie. I told them where to set up (hope they listen), and the photos should be stunning. I am seriously considering going again, but for a class I have not yet taken.
(I fixed the streetcar pic)

Thanks, Michelle! It was nice seeing a positive result after so short a time period (and after so many terrible photos).

Great pics!! You’ve gone to the head of the class!! Way to go! Thanks for the class info.. may have to take a few classes myself.. it’d be nice!

Thanks Kim!
I highly recommend him. Let’s face it, I know nothing about photography, and that is what he was able to get me to do in just a few hours. Imagine what he can do for you who actually knows what you are doing?

Thanks Ann.. for all my years messing with photography, Im still just a photography hack.. Im definitely not to the place where I dont need to learn.. I love photography classes.. I took a couple at our local college quite a few years ago (before DSLR) and loved every minute of it.
There was a travel class that went to Scotland every summer & I still want to do that one.. Maybe one of these days.
