This is the diary of our 2014 CSA share. The cost of our full share is $545 for 22 weeks (this CSA offers a winter share) which will bring us to the last week in October, and works out to $24.75 per week. Western New York weather is such that June is lightest CSA month. September and October will be more than abundant! Usually I feel I don’t get my money’s worth the first few weeks (which will be predominantly lettuces), but the fall bags more than make up for that.
We also purchased a Fruit Share this year for $180, lasting 18 weeks which works out to $10 per week. The local fruit included in the fruit share starts with cherries, apricots, plums, peaches, nectarines, blueberries, and moves into pears, raspberries and of course apples! This portion of the share begins in July.
After an excellent CSA bag last week, I didn’t expect too much this week. As you can tell from the photo, I was wrong! This was a good week.
I went out to the u-pick and picked a ton of green beans. I expect to freeze those for winter consumption. The flowers in the u-pick were glorious, but a lot of them were inaccessible. They had plowed some (very uneven) paths down a few rows of flowers, but not by the sunflowers. You’d have needed a machete to get in there, and I doubt many people in this quiet little bedroom-farming community have one handy in their cars.
The fruit share was a real steal this week: 4 pounds of apricots and/or plums (apricots are like $4/# right now!), and a quart of cherries. Again the cherries were a choice of tart, sweet or white. I again chose sweet (the least expensive variety in the store) because we will eat them. This was week 3 for the cherries, and I have a feeling we are near the end of cherry-season here in Western New York.
Since hubby never ate last week’s salad greens, I skipped them this week. No sense taking what we won’t eat.

I was in Western NY over the weekend so I didnt get to see my share laid out in a pile.. I think it was ok, but it wasnt great.. Actually most of the shares this year have been on the thin side in my opinion… I may look to see if I can find another one next year.. There are bonuses to the one Im a part of now that arent in others I’ve read about in the area. I love having fresh organic veggies and I love the farmers from this CSA but meh…

Hmmm I wonder if it is a growing problem? My first 5 weeks were pretty sad-meh.

Didi, if they have a pick-up near you, give Porter Farms a try. We were with them for years (BEST CSA value in the country – I swear!), We’d still be with them if the Saturday pick-up worked better for us.
