Christmas Craft: Cinnamon Stick Votives
A very easy, DIY craft that takes only 5 minutes, and adds festive lighting and a wonderful holiday scent to your home, these Cinnamon Stick Votives can be assembled by nearly anyone!
Hubby and I went to dinner with my parents, my brother, and his girlfriend the other day. As we were chatting about the table, Hubby told my mother I was doing a few crafts for the blog. My mother was very interested in what. You see my mother was Martha Stewart before Martha Stewart was Martha Stewart. There is nothing my mother cannot craft. Clearly this apple not only fell far from that tree, it rolled across a few fields and landed in some mud before disintegrating. Martha Stewart, I am not.
So knowing my crafting-skill-level was about that of a 10 year old (on a good day), my mom asked me what I had planned. I told her about the shimmer candles I did last week, and how I painted the pine cones for the front foyer. She suggested I do the “cinnamon stick votives,” and I assured her I was going to brave the glue gun and give it a try.
At this point she started shaking her head and smiling. She told me, “You don’t need a glue gun” – I think this was said because she feared for my safety – “you just need a few rubber bands!” And she proceeded to tell me how these were done:
You need:
4 oz Cinnamon Sticks
(3″ or 4″ length)
1 Votive
1 Flameless Votives (do not use a real candle)
3 Rubber Bands
Length of Wired-edge Ribbon
Scissors to cut your ribbon
First things first, place two rubber bands around your votive.
Life up your rubber band and slip a cinnamon stick underneath. It will end up between the rubber band and the votive. The rubber bands will hold the cinnamon stick in place.
Do this all the way around your votive. Place a third, thicker rubber band around the whole pile.
Push the votives down if you like so they are flush with the bottom of the votive. Note: You don’t need to do this, as long as the cinnamon sticks are even, they will support the votive.
Now your cinnamon sticks will be all kinds of crooked. Straighten them out, or make certain they are all at the same angle.
Cut a length of your wired edged ribbon and tie it OVER the rubber bands. Tuck the rubber bands under the ribbon so they do not show.
I tied a simple square knot (left over right and under, right over left and under), and then just manipulated the ends to curl a little (the beauty of wired edged ribbon!)
Insert a flameless candle into the votive,
and turn it on. I strongly suggest you not use a real candle… you just never know.
And 5 minutes later, we are done!
This is with the votives turned on.
The craft time to do all three votives took me 10 minutes total, and about five of those minutes were spent gathering up the supplies. This is one easy craft that will add a nice scent to your house, and look festive at the same time!
Oh tip: I was looking for the short cinnamon sticks at JoAnns, and told Hubby we’d have to stop at the grocery store to buy some. He told me he saw some at the dollar store (for a buck), and he ran in and bought me three packs for $3 total!! Each (4oz) pack perfectly surrounds one 2.2″x2.2″x2.5″ glass votive.
