When the autumn leaves start to fall and it is time to switch out your summer decor for fall decorations, an easy way to update your home decor is to change the swags on your lanterns. Use these easy step-by-step directions to make these beautiful fall lantern swag decorations.
Fall lanterns look beautiful when lit on a pathway (lantern walk), in a front hall, front porch, or on your porch steps. Sometimes it is tough to come up with porch decor ideas, but this simple fall project is great for an outdoor space. You could also use several of these to round out your autumn decor next to your front door. I keep my three lanterns in my front foyer throughout the year, and simply swap out the accessories according to the season and holiday.
Fall Lantern Swag Decorations
Have a plain lantern you would like to spruce up? This floral piece drapes down the side of a lantern as a lantern swags. It is simple to make, and you can easily replicate this exact lantern swag. You can also take the same idea and apply it for Halloween, Christmas, Winter, Independence Day, etc. Simply swap out the floral arrangements to match the season or holiday. These are also simple ideas to make lantern wedding centerpieces.
Lantern centerpieces are a beautiful way to spotlight your table. The size of the lanterns should be scaled to the size of the room and table, however. The same when you are using lanterns near your fireplace – either on the side of the hearth or to dress up a fall mantel.
They can also be used on console tables alone (or in threes) or as tabletop decor when paired with a fall centerpiece. This also would look nice on your Thanksgiving table! Those are some easy fall lantern decor ideas, now how do you achieve them?
Tips and variations for making this fall lantern decoration:
● None of the flowers or colors here need to be used for your swag decorations. Make it to match your color scheme or other autumn decors.
● Hot glue was not used. Feel free to hot glue your flower layers together!
● Inside the lantern place a battery-operated tea light, battery-operated pillar candles (flameless candle – this is what I use), or a wicked tea light or pillar candle. If using fire always exercise caution.
● You can use different sizes of lanterns or candles to create a step-look.
● You can fill the inside with pine cones, small faux pumpkins (mini pumpkins), artificial leaves (silk leaves), and battery operated fairy lights, berry garlands, small Indian corn, or other natural elements that harbor autumn themes. You might even want to look for yellow, red, and orange small glass balls or bulbs (I LOVE that look and do it a lot with small battery-operated fairy lights).
● All items for this craft, including the lantern, can be purchased at your local craft stores such as Joann, Michaels store, or Hobby Lobby.
● To save money, look for the ribbon and picks at a dollar store (Dollar Tree).
● You can purchase a premade bow if making one is not your favorite thing to do.
● You can use a new lantern or old lantern (you may want to paint a rusty lantern to update it or use it as-is for rustic lantern charm). If you scout out garage sales, thrift stores, or consignment stores, you are sure to find an old lantern or two for very little money. Just be sure to give them a good scrub so they are clean and debris (and spider!) free.
● Make several and pair them, or contrast them with different ribbons.
Fall Lantern Swag Decorations Supplies:
(This is per swag)
● Lantern
● 1 Bush Autumn Flowers
● 2 Coordinating Fall Floral Picks (3 of each, so 6 total)
● 2 Filler Bushes
● Floral Tape
● 1.5″ Wired Ribbon
Fall Lantern Swag Decorations Tools:
● Wire Cutters
● Floral Wire
● Scissors
Fall Lantern Swag Decorations Instructions:
1. Start by fluffing up each of the fall picks. The pick on the left is what they will typically look like from the store. The pick on the right is one that I had already fluffed up.
2. Layer one of each pick with a couple of stems of fillers and flowers. Bend the stem of each flower so that flower faces up. Play around with the arrangement until it looks how you want.
3. Use some floral tape to secure this small bouquet together.
4. Repeat steps 2 and three. You are making two stems of flowers. I like to make the second bouquet a little lighter and longer since it will drape down the bottom of the lantern. These can be made identical if you wish.
5. Make a bow for the centerpiece of the swag. This one was made by hand, but it would be just as easy to use a bow-making machine. I made mine with five 10″ loops and three 8″ loops. Do not forget to dovetail or angle cut the ends!
6. Next, place the two bouquets facing opposite directions so that the stems are snug together. Leave about 3 inches of exposed stem to place the bow. Secure these with more floral tape. Use wire to attach the bow in the middle.
7. Secure the swag to the top of the lantern at this point using twine, floral wire, or ribbon. This allows you to finish out the arrangement while it is already in place and not worry about squishing the flowers.
8. Finish out the arrangement by inserting a few remaining flowers, pick pieces, and fillers throughout the bow. Make any adjustments and fluff up the bow loops to finish.
9. Display as desired.
