Unicorn Tree DIY
My niece had an idea for a Unicorn tree last year. When she had all the parts in her cart at Michaels she was stopped multiple times and asked what she planned to do with the materials.
Apparently, we are not alone in liking sparkle.
Unicorn Tree DIY Notes
● The materials necessary to make this easy Unicorn Tree DIY can be purchased at at JoAnn, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby
● We used a white Styrofoam cone for the tree and wrapped it with tulle for a different look. You could also use a green Styrofoam cone.
● We used holiday floral picks because they were cheaper, and lighter, than ornaments.
● The “ornaments” are whatever is pleasing to you. Do make certain to choose several large ones (we used large gingerbread men, unicorns, donuts, etc). The cone is large enough to accommodate the large donuts, gingerbread men, etc. If you decide to use a smaller cone, scale down the size of your picks.
● We used green tulle, but other color choices (especially for unicorn party decor) would be blue, pink, white, silver, gold, or purple. Use glittery tulle to add some sparkle!
● The blue topper was chosen to pick up the blue in the donuts, lollipops, and gingerbread men. If you chose different “ornaments” pick your topper colors to go with them!
● Hot glue was used. You could try goop, but you will have to use copious amounts and hold the glued materials in place until firm.
● Even though this is not really a floral design, it still needs to be spun around as it is a 360° decoration.
● This could be an excellent sugar plum tree if you take out the unicorns and add a few jack-in-the-boxes or possibly teddy bears.
Unicorn Tree DIY Materials:
● 1 Styrofoam Cone 6″ x 24″
● 1 Green Glitter Tulle (6″ x 8 yards)
● 7 Various Larger Floral Picks (used in this craft: 2 donuts, 2 gingerbreadmen, 2 lollipops, 3 unicorns)
● 1 Silver Leaf
● 2 Blue Curly-Qs
● 2 Pink Sequin Light Bulbs (floral picks, 3 bulbs per pick, so 6 total)
● 2 Pink Pom-Poms (floral Picks)
● 2 White Balls Picks
● 72 Jeweled Paper Flowers
Unicorn Tree DIY Tools:
● Wire Cutter
● Hot Glue
● Glue Gun
● Scissors
Unicorn Tree DIY Instructions:
1. Cover your work surface against glue, cuts, and spills catastrophes.
2. Remove the wrapper from Styrofoam cone.
3. Wrap the tree with the tulle. Make sure you hot glue at the top, bottom, and a couple of spots in between the wrap. Once finished, cut off from the roll.
4. Go back and fold down places where the tulle did not lay flat against the cone and tack them down with hot glue. If you have any imperfections, you can hide them with the “ornaments” and/or flowers.
5. Insert blue curly-qs at the top of the tree. Insert the silver leaves. You can add a few dabs of hot glue to make certain the stay fixed in place.
6. Remove the sticks from the gingerbread men, donuts, and unicorns. They will be glued flat to against the cone. If you are lucky you can wiggle the floral sticks out. For the lollipops, clip the stick down so it still looks like a lollipop, but these will also be hot glued flat to the cone.
7. Hot glue a gingerbread man to the bottom of the tree. Use a lot of hot glue as these objects have some weight to them.
8. Turn the tree, and on the opposite side of that glued gingerbread man, go a few inches higher and glue on the second gingerbread man.
9. In the empty space between the gingerbread man, hot glue a donut. Hold it in place until the hot glue dries. You want to hold these heavier pieces down until they are completely dry so they don’t fall off. The hot glue needs to seep through the tulle onto the cone beneath and form a good bond.
10. Now, on the other side, opposite and a little higher, hot glue the other donut. Try and stagger the pieces and not make them match, especially the donuts; you do not want this to look like a Princess Leia tree!
11. Spread out the remaining larger ornaments, the lollipops, unicorns, up the tree. Remember to use a lot of hot glue, and hold in place until dry.
12. Cut down the pink pom-poms until a small stub that can be inserted into the Styrofoam remains, and fill in more spaces. Insert the small remainder of the cut down stick into the Styrofoam tree, hot glue in place. Remember, if you do not like where you have inserted something, pull it out and reposition it before hot gluing in place.
13. Cut down the sequin light bulbs until a small stub that can be inserted into the Styrofoam remains, and fill in the spaces. Insert the small remainder of the cut down stick into the Styrofoam tree, hot glue in place. Note: when you insert the bulbs if you do not like how they stick out away from the tree, manipulate the bulb higher and hot glue the tip to the tree.
14. Cut down the white ball picks until a small stub that can be inserted into the Styrofoam remains, and fill in more spaces. Maneuver the bulbs so they are not sticking out too far. These are S-curved. Add a dab of hot glue to hold in place.
15. The flowers used to fill in the spaces have jewels in the middle so they need to be hot glued in place. If your flowers do not have a jewel, you could pin them in place. The flowers were placed so that there is a feeling of them being tossed over the tree, and they settled in place.
16. Double check that all hot glued pieces are firmly adhered.
17. Display as desired.
