This simple-to-make Valentine’s Day wreath DIY is a fun front door craft. You don’t have to be an experienced crafter to make this valentines wreath; follow the step-by-step instructions in this detailed tutorial to make this fun homemade wreath.
DIY wreaths are easy DIY projects nearly anyone can make. Add this Valentine’s wreath to your Valentine’s decoration in only a few hours! The DIY Valentine wreath is a heart-shaped, cute wreath that can be made in different colors to suit your needs. It can also be made as a door hanger without a ribbon to hang.
Valentine Heart Wreath DIY
This easy-to-make heart wreath is basically a rag wreath that can be customized. I always say that, but people wonder if it is really true. Well, there are photos here from two different heart wreaths, the same process in subtly different colors.
This heart wreath is fuller and contains no pipe cleaners. This was the original holiday wreath my niece and I made four years ago, and I never got to post it (mostly because I lost the process photographs). To change to this wreath, use a broadcloth instead of tulle and omit the pipe cleaners.
This wreath is more sparse and contains more glitter via the tulle, as well as pipe cleaners. The directions listed below are for the pipe cleaner method.
Making your own wreath is the perfect way to customize your holiday decorations. When looking for Valentine’s day wreath ideas, there are a plethora of types, from rag wreaths (such as this) to heart foam wreaths, to a deco mesh wreath, grapevine wreath form, or even wood hearts! So many ideas to make a fun wreath based on traditional wreaths and ideas.
Tips and variations for making this heart wreath:
● Your color choices are your own. This was made for Valentine’s day, so pink, red, white, and silver were used. You could make this for a bridal shower in the wedding colors.
● I do not recommend making this a solid red heart. You want some variation in the color.
● Do not use red felt; your heart shape will look funny.
● You may use a ruler to measure, OR you can fold a pipe cleaner in half, cut on the fold, and use that as a measuring tool. There is no right or wrong to the length. Shorter will reveal the shape of the frame more; longer is significantly easier to knot and can be trimmed later once the wreath is finished if you deem the pieces too long or find the outcome muddled.
● If you can not find the wireless ribbon you like, you can remove the wires once the pieces are cut.
● The tulle can be sparkly or not. Your choice.
● This is basically a rag wreath, so it does not have to be perfect – quite the opposite. Messy is good!
● This wreath does not use a hot glue gun, faux flowers, or burlap ribbon. You can use anything you like; of course, I do not think any of those work to make this adorable wreath.
● The back of the wreath will be flat against your door or wall.
● Materials for this Valentine’s day heart wreath can be purchased online or at your local JoAnn, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby.

Valentine Heart Wreath DIY Directions
1. All strips will be cut to 5.5 to 6 inches long. If you cut as you go, this will eliminate unused materials as you will only cut what you need. You might prefer everything precut so you can just tie and go.
2. Start with the tulle; cut each strip to approximately 6 inches long. In this project, I went color by color to make sure that each area of the wreath had a relatively even distribution of color and texture.
3. Tie each piece in a knot on the heart frame. If you are tying any to the outermost frame, make certain that it is a bit longer and the area is fuller.
4. Once you have filled in the wreath with tulle, I suggest working with the pipe cleaners in next.
5. Measure out the pipe cleaners to 6″. You should be able to bend them in half and cut them (it will be close enough). To keep the pipe cleaners from moving, cross them OVER one of the tulle knots as pictured.
6. After evenly distributing the pipe cleaners throughout the wreath, move on to the ribbon. Continue with the color-by-color method to ensure each area of the wreath has a bit of each color and pattern.
7. The final step is the cotton broadcloth material. Use this to fill in the empty spaces or sparse areas of the wreath.
8. The easy way to cut the broadcloth is to fold the broadcloth in half lengthwise.
9. Fold the broadcloth in half widthwise.
10. Fold it again lengthwise (5.5-6″ in length, but if not perfectly even it does not matter as this is a rag wreath)
11. Cut into 1″ strips.
12. Tie into a knot around one section of the frame.
13. Fill the outermost wire with the most cloth to give the wreath a fuller appearance.
14. Add a ribbon to the wreath so it might be hung from a door hanger or nail.
15. Take a look at your finished product to make certain you do not want to add more fill or cut any very long strips of material.
16. Hang as desired.
