This easy to make, wonky Dr. Seuss inspired wreath is great for all fans of Dr. Seuss literature and artwork. Fully customizable using these step-by-step instructions to reflect your favorite Dr. Seuss story, this wreath makes a wonderful gift for teachers, baby showers, a child’s room, or your front door!
Wonky Dr. Seuss Inspired Wreath
This diagonal shaped Dr. Seuss inspired wreath is crooked and askew. If you are a Dr. Seuss fan you know that little was straight; his artwork did not lend to straight lines, and it was not flat.
This is a great project to do while you are watching TV. Once the lengths are cut, it is tie, tie, tie. There is a pattern, but it isn’t difficult. And, because this wreath is supposed to be wonky, mistakes are a plus!
Wonky Dr. Seuss Inspired Wreath Notes:
● You want this wreath frame to be a tad beat-up if possible. Buy the most dented one on the shelf. You can also bend the wires on the frame a bit, but be careful not to break the tines.
● You want your wreath nice and full. If you skimp, you cannot hide it.
● The pipe cleaners are added for more depth, again Dr. Seuss is not flat. You could also add ribbons for a little extra crazy – red, black, or white works for this wreath.
● This is hung as a diagonal, not as a square.
Wonky Dr. Seuss Inspired Wreath Colors:
When picking colors for this wonky Dr. Seuss wreath, match them to a book color theme, especially if giving this as a teacher’s gift, to someone passing their teaching boards, or for a baby shower.
All Dr. Seuss branded fabrics are busy. Dr. Seuss is busy, so that fits. To not overwhelm your wreath (or your eyesight) pick a cooler and warmer color to compliment the wreath. Choose your pipe colors to match the main colors of the color scheme, and do it all in threes. You can add a fourth or fifth color for more depth and contrast.
While Dr. Seuss is not very sparkly, some sparkly green mesh was used on this wreath to add some depth and contrast. Consider that when you choose your colors and material for your wreath.
For this wreath the three most comon Dr. Seuss colors were choosen:
● Cat in the Hat, Grinch, Mulbury Street
White
Red (but not cherry or fire engine red, a deeper red color)
Black
Other color choice schemes that work very well for Dr. Seuss:
● Sneetches, Yertle the Turtle, Hoton Hatches the Egg
Black/ White/ Turquoise Blue
● Oh, the Places you Will Go, the Lorax, Butter Battle Book
Orange/Yellow/Blue – but muted colors
Wonky Dr. Seuss Inspired Wreath Materials:
● ¾ yard of each of the two Dr. Seuss branded fabric you are using
● 15 Pipe Cleaners – 3 of each color were used on this wreath: red, black, blue, green, white – you can use more if you like
● 3 Tulle Rolls – colors used red, white, black (the green was added sparingly when the wreath was finished)
● 14″ Square Wire Wreath Frame
Wonky Dr. Seuss Inspired Wreath Tools:
● Scissors
● Ruler (if you do not have one built into your cutting matt)
● Cutting Matt
● Pencil
Wonky Dr. Seuss Inspired Wreath Directions:
1. These strips are thicker than normal knot wreath strips. Fold your fabric so you have to cut less! Cut fabric into 6″ long strips, 2″ thick strips.
2. Cut the tulle into 2″ widths strips
3. Tie your fabric around the wreath frame wire. The pattern is:
2 Tulle (Black)
2 Fabric (one type, yellow for this wreath)
2 Tulle (Red)
2 Fabric (other type, blue for this wreath)
2 Tille (White)
4. Repeat until the wreath is finished
Note: the green tulle was added sparingly when the wreath was completely knotted. You do not have to add another color. This wreath looked a little flat, so even though Dr. Seuss is not really sparkly, a touch was added to make the wreath pop. YMMV of course!
5. When the wreath is finished, tie on some pipe cleaners in various bold colors that compliment your fabrics.
6. Curl each end of the pipe clean around a pencil. Remove the pencil and allow the twisted pipe cleaner to remain.
7. Hang as a diagonal, not a square.
Note that I did not bother with a hanger. You definitely could if you wanted one. This is fairly light so it could be as simple as a pipe cleaner twisted on the back of the wreath and then twisted tight to form a hanger.
