Are your spices taking over your kitchen cabinets? Are you tired of having to dig through them to find the one you need? If so, then it’s time to get organized! Spice organization tips can help you organize your spices in an efficient and effective way.
A few years ago, a great spice coupon came out and I needed to check our supplies to see if we needed anything. The spice rack (aka a Lazy Susan) was in such a disarray, I had to reorganize everything!
Spice Organization Tips
As you may or may not know, I do not cook. Ok, I hardly ever cook. And when I do, it is very plain. I cooked like that for nearly 20 years, and it was hard to change my habits when I met and married Hubby.
As you may or may not know, my hubby LOVES to cook, and he is very good at it. He has a collection of spices like you won’t believe! Now, you may have heard me complain once or twice (ok, a million times) that hubby is not very organized. I’m poorly organized but he is so disorganized he makes me look like I have an organizational compulsion. His lack of organization (as well as mine) spills over into nearly all aspects of our house, but the place we have the most er, friendly discussions about the lack of organization in our home is the kitchen.
That is because while hubby loves to cook, he really only has time on the weekend to do so. He’ll prepare four meals and I can usually finagle one or two nights for leftovers which leaves me one night to cook.
And it is VERY difficult, not to mention time consuming, to cook when the last person cooking *cough*Hubby*cough* does not put items back in their proper place.
So, with hubby OOT I took the opportunity to organize the spice rack (I left his Indian spices alone – they are in a neatly labeled storage container in the pantry). We use the lazy Susan in the corner of the kitchen to house our spices. I swear if I ever get to redo a kitchen, I want something like this for the pantry, and a smaller scale version for spices.
This is our lazy Susan “spice rack”:
I hauled everything out of the spice rack and onto the kitchen island. I wanted to see what it was we actually had on hand, what we needed, and what we had copious quantities of.
Is that insane or what? There was a row in the middle that was just various types if peppers!
And this is the portion of that mess that I use to bake with (to be fair, I have items like baking soda, powder, chocolate and sugars in another cupboard):
The rest is alllllllllll hubby’s spices.
With everything on the island, I wrote up what we had and what we needed. I used a spreadsheet and sorted by type and alphabetical order.
I then put everything back, and faced all the spices off so “we” (ie, me) could find what “we” were looking for.
Now to be quite honest, I face-off the spice rack at least every other month. I try and keeping baking together, Italian spices together, the Cajun together, etc. However when hubby uses a spice, IF hubby “puts it away”, it is plopped on the top shelf of the lazy Susan without regard to grouping. This drives me nuts! So, every 12-16 weeks I haul it all out and regroup and reorganize. grrrrrr The difference this time is the list, and the list is for my shopping benefit so I do not overbuy, or purchase the wrong item.
I originally wrote this post on Coupons, Deals and More in 2011. Since then, we purchased a place in St Augustine Florida where there is a great little spice and tea shop! Want to take a guess how many spices we’ve purchased there?
The spice rack still looks good, but I foresee a little TLC in the near future.
Spice Organization Tips
1. Remove all spices from the rack or cabinet.
2. Dispose of any spices that smell or look funky.
3. When you buy a new spice, write the date on the label. That way you will always know how old the spice is.
4. Arrange the spices by alphabetical order.
5. Put them back in the rack or shelf.
A few additional spice organization tips:
6. You may want to have all the same size bottles.
7. You may want to use a lazy Susan inside your cabinet to easily see what you have (if your spice cabinet isn’t a lazy Susan).
8. If you have varying spice sized containers and are not using a standard rack, make a list of what you have and attach it to the inside of the cabinet door. It will help to know what you have, and what you need to purchase.

I guess you won’t be changing him, so you have to figure his messiness is the price you p;ay for having someone cook for you.
I must admit, I have about as many spice bottles as he does. I am the only cook though, so I know where they all are. I wish I had a lazy susan, but I just have a small cabinet full of them. I also have an old Coke bottle case that is nailed to the wall (my kitchen is decorated with my Coke collection). That has my most used used bottles in it.

We originally has an agreement… whichever one of us cooks, the other person cleans up. I think that lasted… never. He really is a mess. LOL
My sister used to have a Coke kitchen! So cool.

Since it is only me living here, I cook but it is in large quantities so that I can eat for two or three days on a recipe. I am not a real spice person, if it is spicy hot I won’t eat it because it makes me sick. My spices are in little $1.00 baskets from Dollar Tree in a drawer of an organizer in my pantry. Easiest way for me to find them and I have four baskets and different types go in each basket. Easy, peasy for me!

Sounds like a great system, Candie! Easy is good.

Oh, boy this is one of my major non frugal areas. My husband and I both enjoy cooking. We have quite a large spice collection. I had to put together a list when a friend of mine complained about how many spices she had in her house. Nothing compared to us. We have about 70 spices, most purchased from penzeys and I see that the spice and tea store you mentioned wants to put a store in Mequon, WI which is going to put them squarely in Penzey’s territory. That shall be interesting. My problem in organizing spices is we have some in bags which are alphabatized, and some in bottles/jars of varying sizes, so you have to remember what type of container the spice is in.

My mother loves Penzeys in Buffalo and is always urging Hubby to stop there. Gee, thanks Ma. He has yet to stop. Maybe I’ll be a sport and take him there after lunch with my grandfather one Friday.

And thats not even talking about the ones in the basement in totes (foodsavered) or in jars that I’ve dried… And I forgot about the freezer.. Just the upstairs freezer though Theres no room in the downstairs one. 😉
