Tips and variations for making this skillet lasagna recipe:
● You can use fresh minced garlic or pre-minced garlic in a jar; approximately one (1) teaspoon will equal the two (2) minced cloves (depending on the clove size). Any Italian store will have it in a large jar.
● In the US, pasta sauce is measured in grams, but everywhere else in the world, it is measured in milliliters. A standard jar of sauce would be 680ml, not grams.
● Be sure to use a skillet that can transfer to the oven. A cast-iron skillet works well for this, but any type of skillet that can go from stove to broiler will work.
● Oven-ready lasagna noodles were used in this recipe, but the regular style will work, too. You will have to cook the noodles on the stovetop for about 8-10 longer, and you may have to add an additional ½ cup of water halfway through cooking to keep it going if you do not use oven-ready lasagna noodles
● If you add vegetables such as mushrooms, bell peppers, or zucchini to this recipe, make certain they are sauteed first.
● You can swap out lean ground beef for the Italian sausage if you prefer. You may even want to consider ground turkey or ground chicken!
● How spicy this skillet lasagna is depends on if you use mild or hot sausage.
● The pasta sauce is up to you, but the marinara sauce is traditional.
● Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese are used, but you can also use other kinds of cheese, such as one of the 4-cheese blends or provolone.
● Consider fresh basil, red pepper flakes, oregano, or other fresh herbs for a sprinkle inside the mixture or on top when serving.
● Store leftovers covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave at 50% power until heated through.
● You can freeze this lasagna for up to 3 months. This can be done either before or after baking. Before baking, top it with the grated cheese and then cover it tightly with foil. Thaw entirely on the counter before baking. If you are freezing after you bake it, it helps to remove it from the pan. Place in an airtight container and freeze for 3 months. When you are ready to eat, thaw at room temperature and reheat in the microwave.
