Makes 1 Cuban Ham Sandwich
Cuban Ham Sandwich Recipe
A Cuban Ham sandwich is a variation of a ham and cheese sandwich. The traditional Cuban sandwich includes Cuban bread, yellow mustard, roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese and dill pickles. I have had much simpler sandwiches at Cuban restaurants in Miami though, seldom did they have everything listed in a “traditional” Cuban sandwich. So when Hubby suggested a Cuban Ham sandwich, I could not wait to see what he came up with!
We had brought down some of Hubby’s smoked ham to Florida with us (meat is crazy-expensive here), and had purchased a Cuban bread that morning at a Cuban bread in St. Augustine. We had cheese and mayo, and since neither of us are that fond of mustard, I was thrilled Hubby left it off. We are also provolone fans, and it worked very, very well in this sandwich.
● Melt butter on top of stove over low heat in a pan.
● Slice two slices of Cuban bread in half width-wise
● Place the Cuban bread on top of melted butter.
● Place provolone cheese on top of bread.
● Place ham on top of cheese.
● Cover with a lid and allow cheese to melt.
● Cook for 5 minutes, or until bread is lightly browned and cheese is melted.
● Remove from pan to a cutting board.
● Spread mayonnaise thinly on each side of the sandwich.
● Place one half of the sandwich on top of the other half
● Cut in half
● Serve hot.
I had Hubby make this sandwich several days in a row so we could use up the Cuban bread. I honestly did not get tired of it, and hope he makes it again very soon!

Cuban sandwich will never use mayo. Never sliced bread. Always Cuban bread which is very close to the French bread. Don’t forget ‘pernil” (roasted pork). Otherwise you have an American Sandwich, which is still a delicious alternative.
