Tips and variations for making these Breakable Chocolate Hearts (Smash Hearts)
● The number of hearts you will get depends on the size of your heart mold. You might only get one or two if you have a large heart mold; a smaller silicone mold could have up to six breakable chocolate hearts. You do not want to make them too small or you will not be able to get much filling inside.
● Use different color combinations in your melting chocolate, from dark chocolate to pink to red or white chocolate melts.
● Be careful when touching the chocolate heart. Melting chocolate has a lovely finish, but fingers can dull the sheen and leave fingerprints when touched. Wear plastic gloves or latex gloves to help alleviate this problem.
● Use milk chocolate, or dark chocolate, or semi-sweet chocolate melts to your taste.
● For the sprinkles, you can use regular jimmies, or hearts, or seasonal ones.
● You can go beyond the typical candy assortment and think outside the chocolate box. Crushed cookies, colorful sprinkles, juju coins, M&Ms, and even mini marshmallows can add layers of texture and flavor. Feel free to experiment with sweet and salty combinations and create your own style and flavor combination.
● Use edible glitter over the drizzle to add sparkle to the top of the heart.
● You can make your own mallet by using a cork and a craft dowel. Push the dowel into the cork, and you are done. This is especially cute if you give these breakable hearts as a gift or place them whole on your table as a favor.
● You can smash the chocolate heart open yourself and place the broken pieces artfully on a platter. If you do, consider adding extra treats like whipped cream, fruit, or a drizzle of contrasting chocolate. This is your chance to elevate the experience from delicious to downright extraordinary. Remember, presentation matters! Set some chocolate-covered strawberries on the platter (dip the strawberries in excess chocolate that has been melted, place on wax paper or silicone matt to set up in the fridge, decorate by drizzling melted chocolate), some chocolate-covered cashews, petit fours, and handmade pieces of fudge. Even hot chocolate bombs or extra candy that is found inside for color would work! Such an easy way to make a lovely table centerpiece or beautiful display on a dessert tray.

Breakable Chocolate Hearts (Smash Hearts) Ingredients:

● 1 cup Milk Chocolate Melts
● Sprinkles, to decorate
● 1lb assorted M&Ms (enough candy of your choice to fill each heart)
Breakable Chocolate Hearts (Smash Hearts) Mise en Place:
● Double boiler (or Medium Microwave-safe Bowl)
● Measuring Cup
● Measuring Spoons
● Silicone Spatula
● Silicone Heart Mold
● Pastry Piping Bag
● Medium Size Round Hole Piping Tip (optional)
How to Make Breakable Chocolate Hearts (Smash Hearts) Directions:
1. Melt the colored/white candy melts over 2 inches of boiling water in a double boiler. Once melted, transfer to a piping bag.
2. Using the piping bag and the colored/white melts, pipe the chocolate around the edge of the mold. Let sit for 5 minutes.
3. In a double boiler, melt the chocolate melts over 2 inches of boiling water.
4. Place 2 tablespoons of melted chocolate (milk, dark, semi) over the colored/white candy in the bottom of the mold. Let it sit for 7 minutes and allow it to harden slightly.
5. After 7 minutes, using a spoon, force the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Let sit for 2 minutes and repeat, adding more chocolate if needed. You want the chocolate to be about an eighth of an inch thick around the mold, including the side of the heart.
6. Put the heart mold in the fridge for approximately 10 minutes to cool completely.
7. Remove the hardened heart mold from the fridge and carefully remove the heart shells from the mold.
8. Using the piping bag, add additional chocolate as decoration and place the sprinkles on top of the hearts before the chocolate sets.
9. Flip the chocolate heart over and fill it with candy.
10. Flip back onto a plate or tray. You can cover the bottom with chocolate if you like (but you do not have to, and the ones in this tutorial do not have a bottom) and allow to harden completely.
11. Use a rubber or wooden mallet to crack open and enjoy.
