How to Make Festive & Easy Strawberry Christmas Lights
These Strawberry Christmas Lights are fun, whimsical, and, most importantly, festive. This easy recipe is a cute twist on classic chocolate-covered strawberries. You do not have to worry about turning on the oven, and they make a fantastic addition to a holiday fruit platter or as a stand-alone delicious dessert!
I don’t know how old you are, but back in the day, Christmas tree incandescent lights looked like this:
My parents had them as their Christmas tree lights until the ’80s, and I am pretty sure they had them on the house through the ’90s. At one point, my mother mixed them in with bubble lights on the TV room tree (she had several trees), but the traditional incandescent string lights were a staple in my parents’ Christmas decor.
Vintage Christmas light bulbs have a classic look (you can buy them here). Strawberries are the perfect fruit to mimic that look. Just dress up the strawberries, add some chocolate and sugar, and voilà! edible Christmas lights. These strawberry lights are very easy to make. Strawberry bulbs are great to make with your children or grandchildren. The whole family will love these juicy treats.
Tips and Variations for making these Strawberry Christmas Lights:
● Keeping the strawberries dry is very important to this recipe. Simply put, sugar can melt when it’s in contact with moisture. Trust me, it makes a huge mess. For best results, you want to start with a dry strawberry exterior.
● 1 quart of strawberries is approximately 1½ pounds.
● The white chocolate was Merkens brand chocolate wafers. You can use any brand of chocolate melting wafers you like. I suggest using white chocolate melts, but many types of chocolate, such as milk chocolate melts, dark chocolate melts, semisweet chocolate melts, or colored melts – basically any chocolate wafer color or brand that makes good melting chocolate will work.
● Substitute a gum drop, a small piece of thick black licorice, jujubes, or peanut butter cups, or cover mini marshmallows in chocolate and dip it in the green sugar in place of the Rolos stems.
● Don’t want to use colored sugar? Use colored chocolate to dip the strawberry into. If you want sparkle (because the colored chocolate strawberries will look flat), sprinkle some decorator sugar on the wet chocolate coating before it hardens.
● Use an inserted fork or a wooden skewer to dip the strawberries into the chocolate instead of holding the stem if you like.
● How to make colored sugar
● AmeriColor food coloring in red, blue, yellow, and green was used in this recipe. You can use any food coloring or colors.
● These are covered in sugar. You can also cover them in sprinkles, but I like the sparkle from the sugar, which gives off a more “twinkle lights” vibe.
● Red licorice was used in this tutorial, but black licorice or green licorice can be used for a black or green wire look.
● While these are shown for Christmas, making them for other special occasions just means changing the sugar colors. For instance, changing them to all pink or red works for Valentine’s Day; spring colors would make these lovely for Easter or Mother’s Day; orange, green, and purple would work for Halloween.
● If you like, you can use these in a fruit bouquet.
● This recipe is made with common ingredients at local grocery stores. The chocolate candy melts can also be found at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Joann. or purchased online.
● Store leftovers, covered, in the fridge for 2 days. After that point, the strawberries start to break down a little and can be a little mushy.
● You can not freeze this recipe.

How to Make Festive & Easy Strawberry Christmas Lights Directions:
1. Wash your strawberries thoroughly and dry them as well as you can with a paper towel. Keep the tops (or stems) of the strawberries intact.
2. Place the white chocolate melts in a bowl that is safe for the microwave. Microwave for 1 minute at 50% power and stir. Continue microwaving at 50% power in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Be sure to stir the chocolate between each interval.
3. Use the stem and leaves as a holder and dip the clean, dry strawberries in the melted chocolate. Try to cover as much of the strawberry as you can. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
4. Immediately place the wet chocolate strawberry over the sanding sugar and spoon the sugar over the chocolate. You want to cover the chocolate completely.
5. Place the chocolate and sugar-covered strawberry on a lined parchment paper cookie sheet to set.
6. Once the chocolate and sugar have set, gently remove the stem and leaves by twisting it off. Do not cut into the strawberry; the juice can cause the sugar to melt. You should be able to twist it off easily without breaking the skin.
7. Use a little dab of white chocolate to attach the Mini Rolo to the top of the strawberry.
8. Use licorice whips to create the cord and attach it with melted chocolate. The bulb spacing on a plate or tray is up to you.
9. Serve immediately.
10. Store leftovers covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 days. After that point, the strawberries start to break down a little and can be a little mushy.
