Strawberry Margarita Cupcakes Recipe with Tequila
These unique cupcakes doctor a white cake mix. That is why they are so simple to make. They will be a huge hit for dessert, especially if you are having Mexican food or Tex-Mex for dinner that night.
The key to these cupcakes is getting the right balance of flavors – you want that classic margarita taste, but you don’t want the tequila to overpower your cupcake. I use just a touch of tequila in the doctored box mix and in the frosting to give it a subtle taste. If you want a stronger strawberry taste, I suggest using my strawberry buttercream frosting recipe and adding a little tequila (it may require more confectioners’ sugar to soak up the wet).
Whether you are hosting a party or simply craving a unique dessert, this delicious margarita cupcake recipe is sure to be a hit. Enjoy the perfect balance of fruity and boozy flavors in every bite.
Tips and variations for making these strawberry margarita cupcakes:
● For my UK and Australian friends: confectioners’ sugar is icing sugar (powdered sugar, 10x).
● In the United States, ½ cup butter = 1 stick, 1 cup = 2 sticks of butter
● Red food gel will result in a brighter color. Substitute a few drops of red food coloring if you do not have red food gel.
● If you do not have a piping bag, use a plastic Ziploc bag by cutting the corner of the bag. You can also insert a top into the plastic bag.
● To make these virgin margarita cupcakes, you would need to substitute the tequila with another liquid. Water would work in place of the tequila. They won’t be quite so “authentic,” but I bet they would be good.

● The cupcake and the frosting can be made ahead and stored separately. Make sure to bring it to room temperature before serving.
● Frost the cupcake on the day it will be served. Frosted cupcakes can stay out for up to 8 hours without refrigeration.
● The frosted cupcakes can be stored tightly covered in an airtight container in the fridge.
● The lime and strawberry slices will dry out pretty quickly. So add the garnishes just before serving.
