Hubby and I attended a local art auction a few weeks ago. In addition to auctioning off art, they had a basket auction where you bought tickets for a chance to win basket prizes. We bought $100 worth of tickets (it was for charity), dropped the tickets into the bags in front of the baskets we were interested in, and at the end of the night we found we had won four baskets! As part of one of the wins, there was a bottle of Cavit Collection Provincia Di Pavia Riesling 2006.
Today I would like to share with you my thoughts about Cavit Collection Riesling, more specifically Cavit Collection Provincia Di Pavia Riesling 2006.
The Cavit winery is based in Trentino, Italy. Vineyards in this region enjoy the warming effects of a dry, balmy breeze that sweeps across Lake Garda and protects the fruit from external moisture and disease. Cool evenings promote rich, intense aromas and flavors in the grapes. The area produces Riesling grapes that create a pale yellow wine color, with floral citrus notes.
Vintner’s Notes
GRAPES: 100% Riesling
VINEYARD: No other white varietal rivals Riesling’s magical blend of exhilarating aromas, ripe fruit flavors, refreshing acidity and versatile compatibility with food. The cool northern Italian climate in which Cavit’s vineyards are planted provides excellent growing conditions for this beguiling white grape.
ALCOHOL %: 11.6
My Notes
I usually like Riesling wines. I think my taste-buds are predisposed to like sweeter white wines, hence my love of Moscatos. I also have written glowing reviews of other Rieslings, including the very cheap, and my favorite wine of all. To me, a Riesling is not only a delight for sipping, it pairs well with so many foods. I don’t usually consider a Moscato a dinner wine, whereas a Riesling can be, so I generally find Rieslings more versatile.
I thought the Cavit Collection Provincia Di Pavia Riesling 2006 was fabulous! Light and refreshing, it tasted sweet on my tongue. I didn’t get citrus, but rather apricot-grape. And for me to taste a definite fruit-note is unusual as I am more of a “big picture” gal than one who picks out the details. Pale yellow in color, the bouquet was fruity, not floral, on the Cavit Collection Provincia Di Pavia Riesling 2006.
I will tell you all that Hubby didn’t care for this wine at all. He’s usually better than I am at seeing the good in most wines. While I am pretty much an instant “love it or hate it” wine drinker, he will give many more wines a chance than I will, an coax me into that second, third and fourth taste. For whatever reason, he didn’t find this wine at all compelling, and he wouldn’t buy it again.
Selling for $10 – $15 per bottle, I would definitely purchase the Cavit Collection Provincia Di Pavia Riesling 2006, and was thrilled to win it at auction!
Have you tried the Cavit Collection Riesling? What did you think?
As always, drink responsibly and please don’t drink and drive.
